Just finished "Hung Jury" by my old friend Tom Brewster. Very well written with good characterization and colorful use of analogies. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a good crime drama. Good job Tom!

Tom Brewster begins his book with a complete untruth by claiming his book “is a work of fiction” and all “names, characters, places, and incidents are products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously and are not to be construed as real. Any resemblance to actual events, locations, organizations, or persons, living or dead, is ENTIRELY COINCIDENTAL.” This book, in reality, is taken from the real-life murders committed by notorious serial killer Russell Albin Smrekar (Roderick Constance). The best parts of this book - the chapters that keep it interesting - are based on the true murders of Smrekar’s real-life victims Michael Mansfield (John Mason), Ruth Martin (Irene Stokes), and Jay and Robin Fry (Jack and Theresa Fink). Two other murders occur in Brewster’s book that are fictitious, and he made up some scenes that I found ridiculous, but the real-life murders are not “products of the author’s imagination.” Tom Brewster has twisted the truth slightly, here and there, but the concept of “The Hung Jury” is, in fact, BASED ON A TRUE STORY. Why has Brewster claimed otherwise?

I’m Investigative Writer/Author Bonnie J. Thompson. I’ve been reinvestigating and writing about the 1976 Logan County (Lincoln, IL) murders for nearly 20 years. My first published work, a screenplay “Process of Elimination,” (sold through ) is about true leading character Russell Smrekar and the real-life circumstances surrounding the true murders of Michael Mansfield, Ruth Martin and Jay and Robin Fry (victims’ real names used). Unlike Tom Brewster, I don’t attempt to take credit for dreaming up the facts. I present my screenplay as being “based on a true story.”

Before expiring at Menard Penitentiary in Chester, IL in 2011, Smrekar reportedly made a deathbed confession to killing Mansfield and Martin. He claimed to have buried Martin under the construction of Interstate 55 in June of ’76, but there’s no proof verifying his alleged claim. Nonetheless, the Lincoln Police Department (Willoughby Hills PD) regards the Martin case as closed, even though her remains have never been recovered.

Former Lincoln Police Detective William A. Krueger also wrote a book about the real-life Smrekar murders and claimed his book, “A Force for Evil,” is the true story of his involvement in the investigations of the Martin and Fry murders. However, Krueger misled the public and by depicting scenes in his book, relating to evidence, that are completely fabricated. He also presented hearsay as fact.

My newest release, “BURIED TRUTH," is a trilogy and the most comprehensive reveal of the true facts relating to the 1976 cold cases of Michael Mansfield and Ruth Martin, the triple homicide of Lloyd, Phyllis and Terri Schneider, and the double homicide of Jay and Robin Fry. Through my personal investigation, I have uncovered new information and evidence supporting that convicted murderers Russell Smrekar and Michael Drabing (convicted by my father of the Schneider triple homicide) did not act alone. Further, I’ve found evidence of a probable cover-up involving certain individuals involved in the Ruth Martin investigation. Monumental evidence in the Martin case is now missing from the Lincoln Police Department without explanation, and William A. Krueger has made egregiously false claims about this evidence; his claims directly oppose established documented facts. Tom Brewster and William Krueger worked for the Lincoln PD during the same time frame and are well acquainted.

Based on my years of investigation and awareness of the true facts, what Krueger and Brewster have done is muddy the waters and made it difficult for the public to discern the true facts from fiction in these real-life murder cases. I, on the other hand, have done my best to expose the TRUTH to the public, while also calling for official reinvestigation and DNA testing of all existing evidence in the murders of Mansfield, Martin and the Schneiders. Official reinvestigation, without a doubt, should be conducted by agencies outside Logan County (Lincoln County in Brewster’s book), and the time is now.
Just finished the book. It was a good read...held my interest and the book actually took me to 1976 and the tragic story told by Tom Brewster. I would recommend it, and I will probably read it again.
Great Book
Since I live in "Willoughby Hills", I found this fascinating. I have heard bits and pieces of the murders and the rumors, but never the whole thing.
I really enjoyed this book. Keeping an opened mind between facts and fiction, it was a fast read that kept my attention and a curious desire for more. The author got inside a dark mind that left me spooked, while at other times, I was laughing out loud.
this is the third work that I have read pertaining to this criminal case. I am very familiar with the location even tho I was living elsewhere in the U.S. when these events took place. Each time I read a different work I seem to learn more.
